History of Thousand Island Dressing!
- Although there are also a couple of stories about who created Thousand Island dressing, we definitely know it was named for the location where it was first prepared: the Thousand Islands region of New York. The Thousand Islands are a chain of islands in the Saint Lawrence River between northern New York and Canada. The river begins at Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, and heads east to the Atlantic Ocean.
- The dressing is a mixture of mayonnaise, ketchup, and other seasonings. It is often served with burgers and sandwiches, like the Reuben! Some versions add tomato paste, some add paprika, some add Tabasco. A lot of recipes use ketchup.
- The supposed original version varies a bit, too. One version includes mayonnaise, black olives, sweet pickle relish, cloves, vinegar, and sugar. Another has mayonnaise, ketchup, a bit of chili sauce, pickle relish, and chopped hard-boiled egg.
Let's Learn About the Great Lakes!
- The Great Lakes are a string of connected freshwater lakes on the upper Midwestern part of the United States—they share a border with Canada and the US.
- There are five Great Lakes, and their names are Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.
- The Great Lakes started to form around 14,000 years ago during the last glacial period. Ice sheets melted and exposed basins that they had carved into the land, which in turn filled with the water that melted, forming lakes.
- There are about 35,000 islands within the Great Lakes region.
- The lake names are derived from Native American or French names.
- Sturgeon are the biggest fish found in the Great Lakes, and some can weigh up to 200 pounds!
- The lakes are popular spots for fishing and boating, and they also provide essential transportation routes for the transfer of goods by boat.
- Lake Superior's water volume is enough to submerge the North and South American continents in one foot of water! That's a total of three quadrillion gallons of water!
