Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May and offers a special chance to come together as a family while honoring the brave people who gave their lives in service to our country. And it’s also the unofficial kickoff to summer!
What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day began after the Civil War as a way to honor fallen members of the U.S. military. On Memorial Day, it’s customary to visit cemeteries and memorials, decorate graves with flags, and participate in community events. (Note: this differs from Veterans Day, which celebrates all who have served in the military.) It’s a great opportunity to talk with kids about what it means to be courageous, to stand up for others, and to give back—values that go far beyond a single day.
Plan a Patriotic Picnic!
